NFL Legends Draft Roger Williams for US Senate

Press Releases

Former Players Join Team Williams and Praise His Business Leadership

"As an offensive lineman, I worked every down to protect the quarterback or block for the running back," said Rayfield Wright. "That's what Roger will do in Washington. He'll protect our values and he'll help us move down the field with his business experience and leadership."

"Roger will fight for common sense economic policies in Washington," added Bob Lilly. "He'll be the quarterback we need for common sense Texas values."

"Roger will carry the ball for all Texans," agreed Norm Bulaich. "He will work to empower entrepreneurs so that they can revitalize our economy."

"What a thrill to have the endorsement of three NFL Legends right before the NFL draft," Williams said in accepting the endorsement. "They are all great athletes. But more importantly, they are all great Americans who know that more government will not turn our economy around. I look forward to working with them as together we fight for lower taxes, less government and greater economic growth."

Williams announced an exploratory committee for the United States Senate on December 12, 2008. A former professional baseball player and former college head coach, he is best known for his 35 years as a successful businessman and as Texas' 105th Secretary of State. As Secretary of State, Williams worked tirelessly to promote economic development, investment and job creation across Texas. He also served as the state's Chief Liaison for Texas Border and Mexican Affairs as well as Chair of the state's 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Response Strike Force. Williams' civic activities include serving on the Board of Trustees for the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University where he co-chairs the school's capital fundraising campaign. Williams is also a member of the Texas Christian University Board of Trustees, his alma mater. He also serves on the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Board of Directors as well as serving on the Admiral Nimitz Foundation Board of Directors in Fredericksburg, Texas.

Williams and his wife, Patty, reside in Weatherford and have two daughters.
