Gordon England Endorses Roger Williams for U.S. Senate

Austin, Texas – Former Deputy Secretary of Defense and United States Secretary of the Navy, Gordon England today endorsed Roger Williams to be Texas’ next United States Senator.

He was President of General Dynamics Fort Worth and in other senior executive positions with General Dynamics and Lockheed before his time with the United States Department of Defense.  In his time as Secretary of the Navy, England was credited with making some of the most sweeping changes to the Navy in decades. He then served as Deputy Secretary of Defense for three and a half years.  England is well known for his community service, including serving as Vice Chairman of the Board of Goodwill Industries and serving on the USO board of Governors.  He is a recipient of the Department of Defense Distinguished Public Service Award.

“I am proud to support Roger Williams,” said England.  “The United States faces challenges to our national security from all over the world.  America needs a Senator like Roger Williams who has the knowledge and commitment in both economics and national security to help see our nation through this difficult time.  Texas and all of America will be fortunate to have Roger Williams as Senator.”

“As my exploratory Committee begins to build a team of experts for an eventual run for Senate, I am proud to now have Texas’ most talented and accomplished military expert as part of that team,” said Williams.

Roger Williams announced an exploratory committee for the United States Senate on December 12, 2008. Williams is a former professional baseball player and former college head coach, he is best known for his 35 years as a successful businessman and as Texas’ 105th Secretary of State. As Secretary of State, Williams worked tirelessly to promote economic development, investment and job creation across Texas. He also served as the state’s Chief Liaison for Texas Border and Mexican Affairs as well as Chair of the state’s 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Response Strike Force. Williams’ civic activities include serving on the Board of Trustees for the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University where he co-chairs the school’s capital fundraising campaign. Williams is also a member of the Texas Christian University Board of Trustees, his alma mater. He also serves on the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame Board of Directors as well as serving on the Admiral Nimitz Foundation Board of Directors in Fredericksburg, Texas.
